Maureen Yoder Biography
Maureen Yoder has been teaching art to elementary students at Muhlenberg School District since 1994. Prior to teaching art, Ms. Yoder lived in New York City, where she worked as a painter, animator, illustrator, and graphic designer. Her paintings have been shown in Soho galleries, and her cut-out animations have been broadcast on PBS. Her present project, “Women in Art History” is the culmination of all these experiences. She presently lives outside of Kutztown in a log house in the woods of Greenwich Township. She has two sons. Maureen Yoder is a graduate of Kutztown University; she has a BFA in Painting with Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification.
History of the Project: “Women in Art History”
Women in Art History began as a third grade lesson in sketchbook making. To personalize the books students had the option of either making a fishing tackle basket or purse, that is to say the sketch books would have a handle along the spine, and students were encouraged to make drawings and entries that related to the theme of their book. As an example, I made a purse-book that showed famous artworks of women and information about them. While doing so, I realized that there were no art activity books that focused on female artists, nor were there any books on biographies of women artists that were directed to the young reader. I decided to create a book that provided brief, biographies of famous women in art, an art activity that related to each artist, and include in the book a section of blank sketchbook pages to encourage the young artist to draw on their own. “Women in Art History” is a work in progress; it is my Masters in Art Education thesis project. I am in the process of presenting it to publishers of children’s books for eventual publication.
